Pongal

Pongal is a holiday celebrated by the people of Tamil Nadu to worship animals, the sun, and the other stuff thats helpful to farming, I guess. Pongal is also the name of a special dish prepared on that day. It is celebrated on the 14th of January.

Aclay pot is placed over a fire and is kept in direct sunlight (so the sun god can see it - by the way he is called Suryan)
A kolam is drawn right outside the door using rice flour. An overflowing pot signifies the festival name- pongal.
 Almost done with the outline.....
Colored flour is now used to make the pattern more colorful.....

There. It's done. Notice the sun on top?
                                                        See? There's the overflowing pot.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!

Wishing you a very Happy New Year!

Since it was my Dad's birthday on the new year, we had a chance to invite family members.( but if we didn't invite them they would have come anyway). We ordered dinner and it was fun. We are a bit sad we didn't get to stay up till midnight because we were too tired anyway.

My moms birthday was on the 7th and we had a surprise cake and decorations put up for her. Me and my mom left to my cousin's house to bring her and her mom to our house and during that time, my sister and my dad bought the cake and the decorations.
Our family friends who lives in Texas sent a package with a card for new year and it reached us right on her birthday so she was really excited. (by the way a special thanks to Meena aunty and Bala uncle!)
